Chiropractic is a licensed healing art throughout the U.S., Canada, and many other countries. Candidates for the Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.) degree must enroll in an accredited chiropractic college after earning at least an undergraduate degree. Upon successful completion of our chiropractic degree program and graduation, we must also pass national and state board exams to become licensed and eligible to practice in a particular state.

The word chiropractic is used to refer to a philosophy, a field of scientific study, and a natural healing art. Chiropractic came onto the healing arts scene at the end of the 19th century with its own methods of analysis and body of techniques for manually correcting spinal misalignments or subluxations. A minister friend of D. D. Palmer, the Founder of Chiropractic, put together two Greek words to make the word chiropractic, which literally means, done by hand.

Spinal misalignments are associated with nerve irritation or impingement. Since the nervous system is the communication system for the body and controls and coordinates all human functioning, we want to make sure that it can work properly at all times. Patients have used chiropractic services for more than a century because chiropractic care can safely relieve pain and many forms of illness. Regular chiropractic maintenance care can also keep our cells, tissues and organs healthier and help us to PREVENT unnecessary physical, mental and emotional suffering. Regular care can also keep the spinal joints from degenerating, ensuring that we can continue having ease of mobility as we age. Chiropractors are generally not licensed to prescribe medications or perform surgery.

Just as the brain is encased in and protected by the skull or cranium, the nerve roots and spinal cord are shielded by the spinal column, which is made up of 24 moveable vertebrae and a sacrum. Misalignments or subluxations of the vertebra disturb the flow of energy and information signals throughout the network of nerves. This disturbance, in turn, causes malfunctions in the body/mind system. Whether or not there are immediate symptoms from these occurrences, anything that interferes with our physical functioning undermines our health.

Since studying with U.K. osteopath, Dr. Robert Boyd, I now treat my patients by working on the cranium. Through the unique methodology that Dr. Boyd developed, it is no longer necessary to move the individual vertebrae one at a time: Correcting the cranium using the Bio Cranial System causes the spine to automatically realign itself.
