Eat Like a Chimpanzee?
by Dr. Stuart C. Marmorstein
One of my patients introduced me to a book, Green For Life by Victoria Boutenko. The author has a brilliant health idea: green smoothies.
Before you turn up your nose at the idea, let's explore it a little. Chimpanzees, it turns out, are 94.5% genetically identical to human beings. A hefty portion of their diet is composed of leafy greens. Might we fare better if we emulated them, at least in some ways?
Back in 1975, I experimented with an all-raw diet. Ms. Boutenko and her family have transitioned to an all raw diet, but you can still benefit from the green smoothies even if you don't want to take things quite so far. The Boutenkos ran into some of the same trouble I did because we don't share the same strong jaw muscles and teeth that the chimps have. This can make it difficult to liberate the rich nutrients from the surrounding fiber. I lost a lot of weight when I was eating a raw vegetarian diet: too much, in fact. Now I know it was because I couldn't break down my food well enough.
Enter the modern blender (I use a Jack LaLanne, others use a Vita-Mix. A strong motor is a must!) The blender puts the powerful, chlorophyll-laden food into the smoothie. You can make your smoothie more sweet with fruit, or savory with vegetables. Either combines well with the greens. Water is another key ingredient. You get the fiber to help clean you out, the chlorophyll (very similar to our blood, chemically); and a surprising amount of high quality protein in these smoothies. The enzymes are also still present because the smoothie is raw. In my experience, they taste delicious and fill me with energy. Many of my junk cravings have diminished.
Try these fresh ideas and see whether you also feel a boost in energy.
