A Weighty Subject
My doctor told me to stop having intimate
dinners for four; unless there are three other
people.
Orson Welles
Actor, writer, director and producer 1915-1985
The brilliantly creative Mr. Welles did not heed his doctor's advice, continuing to indulge his huge appetite for food, strong beverage and cigars. He was grossly overweight when he died of a heart attack at age 70.
Is appetite the problem? It's actually a major part of the reason so many of us are too fat.
A colleague told me about a book called The Rosedale Diet by Ron Rosedale, M.D. and Carol Colman. Dr. Rosedale's book has one stated goal: to help you:
- Turn off your hunger switch!
- Live Longer
- Lose weight fast
- And Keep It Off!
A tall order? My wife and I decided to find out for ourselves. After all, who wouldn't want to lose weight, normalize cholesterol and triglycerides, lower blood pressure (if it's too high) and not feel deprived?
My blood pressure measured 120/74 with a pulse of 67 yesterday morning. I have lost twelve pounds since starting the program, the food tastes good, and my appetite has gone way down. My wife is having similar results. Neither of us ever want to get started taking blood pressure medication or cholesterol-lowering drugs.
There are good recipes in the back section of the book. We rely on my expertise to figure out what nutritional supplements we need, rather than to follow the generic supplement recommendations in the book.
How does it work? A hormone in the body called "leptin" is responsible for how hungry we get AND for how well we burn fat. Certain foods trigger us to have too much leptin in the blood, which makes us too hungry, and which makes us burn sugar rather than fat. Once sugar is depleted, the body will start breaking down the protein in our muscles and bones rather than breaking down fat. This can also lead to flabbiness and osteoporosis.
The diet is not a super high protein diet. It IS a fairly low carbohydrate diet. The emphasis is on eating decent amounts of high quality protein (neither too high nor too low); plenty of vegetables, and high quality fats. It eliminates a lot of junk and is therefore a good diet for anyone, even if they don't need to lose weight. If you do need to lose weight, I believe this is a safe and sensible way to go about it. You can get the book here.
A Reminder about our Reminder Program
Are you ever too busy to do the important things? Would you like to have regular maintenance care, and have me track it for you? We have a voluntary reminder program available. If you tell me not to let you go past a certain number of weeks or months between visits, my computer can remember it for both of us. It will send you an email or fax reminder if you go longer than you intended to go between visits. Send me the details here if you'd like me to set this up for you. Most people prefer to be notified by email, but I can set it up for you to receive a fax, if you'd prefer. We aren't equipped to telephone you.
CranioBiotic Technique Update
CranioBiotic Technique, formerly AllerTouch, is a method for helping the body eliminate allergies, toxins and micro-organisms and their residues. In addition, it includes techniques for helping with trigger points, weak muscles, and tight muscles. Dr. M. Anthony Smith taught seminars in this approach for a couple years. I was fortunate enough to be able to take his class twice before he discontinued teaching it.
We also became friends, and talk on the phone from time to time. Like when he has a big breakthrough. This past Sunday, he filled me in on some of his private research information. It has the potential to drastically speed up testing and treatment when I use his work.
Quickie Items
In a future newsletter, I'll talk about the importance of zinc to your health. AND how we can test to see whether you have enough zinc.
This Friday, my last appointment will be at 5:00 because of travel plans.
Please don't ask me to to take back nutritional supplements once you've opened them. I will do whatever testing I need to do beforehand to be sure that your supplements are compatible with your body and its current condition. As your condition changes, so will your nutirional needs.
Coming in from out of town? Consider booking a double appointment so we can get more done during your visit.
Thanks, as always, for reading what I write and recommending my services.
Yours in and for good health,
Stuart C. Marmorstein, D.C., D.B.C.S.
