Lies and Healing

"Treating illnesses is why we became doctors. Treating patients is what makes most doctors miserable." Dr. Gregory House, portrayed by Hugh Laurie
"The truth of the human condition is that everyone lies. The only variable is about what." This is another House-ism, a quote from the fictional Dr. Gregory House of the Fox TV Series, House (reruns available on USA Network). I've learned many positive and negative lessons from this intense and complex character.
The staff at the Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital puts up with House because of his brilliance. This head of the Department of Diagnostic Medicine is himself a self-medicating chronic pain patient due to an infarct that caused death of a major part of one of his thigh muscles: He limps and walks with a cane.
His communication style is shockingly blunt and even intentionally offensive. It's part of the way he teaches, and also part of the way he keeps colleagues and patients from becoming close to him. There is a deeper part of him that really does care about others, but he can also detach from his patients to solve their medical mysteries. If he has to risk their lives to accomplish this, he's fine with that, too.
What do I admire about House? He understands that there is always the "problem behind the problem." He knows that the patients lie. If they are conscious, they lie about facts relevant to their condition. There are hidden clues to their illness in their home environment and their relationships with others. House will send his staff to break into their homes to look for these lifesaving clues! He even knows that the diagnostic tests can mislead his team of medical sleuths and waste precious time. Knowing that his colleagues are also all-too-human, he won't allow a pet theory to prevail without proof. Logic comes before friendship in his world.
I have found in my own work with patients that they will "crash" if I try to provide only short term relief without being sure that:
- The brain is aware of what is going on in the body.
- Muscles supporting the joints (especially in the spine) work well enough to keep bones from moving dangerously out of place.
- Organ function is decent.
- Emotional stress is manageable (and managed)!
Based on this knowledge, I've had to combine techniques rather than to try to please my teachers through loyalty to their theories and practices. Sometimes I have to invent new techniques to get the job done. When the patient is not getting better, I remember another House-ism: "All of those clever reasons were wrong."
Yes, I work with a different patient population from Dr. House's. My patients are not facing imminent death or permanent disability within hours or days. However, the thought processes and discipline we have to keep in mind at all times are the same. Knowing that everyone lies helps to keep me honest. Now, if only Dr. House could be a little...nicer?
Another House
The other house is an three bedroom modular home on about eight acres of rolling countryside in Willis, Texas. Yes, you can find peace and quiet just 58 miles from the center of Houston. A place for horses or chickens, big dogs that like to run, or just a garden as big or small as you'd like. No neighbors looking in your windows or annoying you with their stereos. A little pond. Suitable for dreams and projects--commercial or otherwise. It's got a well and septic system and low taxes. About a mile from I-45 and close to Lake Conroe and Sam Houston State Park. If you are ready for country living and a country pace, whether full-time or just on the weekends, let's talk. Email me through this link and put something in the subject line like, "About that country place." You could be planning that garden soon.
More Scary Mercury in Your Food News--NOT about fish!
Mercury poisoning is bad for your physical and mental health. You and your little kids with developing brains can get mercury poisoning from HFCS--high fructose corn syrup. The symptoms of mercury poisoning can include:
- impairment of peripheral vision
- disturbances in sensations - 'pins and needles' and/or numbness - usually in the hands feet; sometimes around the mouth
- lack of coordination of movements, such as writing
- impairment of speech, hearing, walking
- muscle weakness
- skin rashes
- mood swings, memory loss, mental disturbances
HFCS is a processed sweetener, generally from genetically modified corn, that is cheaper to produce and transport than sugar. Because it is more profitable than sugar, it has found its way into soft drinks, snack foods and prepared foods. A high percentage of samples have now also been shown to contain mercury.
According to the Weston A. Price Foundation, High fructose corn syrup is extremely soluble and mixes well in many foods. It is cheap to produce, sweet and easy to store. It's used in everything from bread to pasta sauces to bacon to beer as well as in "health products" like protein bars and "natural" sodas.
Without considering the mercury issue, HFCS has been implicated in causing and aggravating obesity, and it complicates matters for diabetics. My advice: read labels and avoid high fructose corn syrup.
Yours in and for good health, and thanks for sharing these thoughts with me.
