Recovering from the Storm Inside

A poor life this if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.
~ William Henry Davies

As much as any wind can move buildings and sand, something else has moved me: the brave and generous spirit of my fellow Gulf Coast inhabitants during Hurricane Ike and its aftermath. There is a time when we cannot do anything but witness a raw force that lacks feeling, a force that sweeps away anything in its path. When that time ends, and people experience loss, there is need. Whether the loss is a few hours or days of electricity, a cherished photo album, a tree, a home or a life; there is need. It was heartening to see people's higher natures on display in the midst of crushing destruction. It feels good to live among friendly and helpful people ready to give whatever they can when they know that others hurt.

When I was a young boy, Dwight D. Eisenhower was President of the United States. He blew into office on the slogan, "I like Ike!"

The self-effacing farmer-turned general was quoted as saying, I can think of nothing more boring for the American people than to have to sit in their living rooms for a whole half hour looking at my face on their television screens. After watching the news for the last week, and listening to the stories of people we personally knew, I experienced a variety of emotions. At times, I felt sympathy for the people hit the hardest by the storm. I also experienced boredom, restlessness and impatience, wonder at the power of nature, and a pull to find the center of the storm inside myself. Have your own feelings been of a mixed nature, as though stirred by something powerful and out of control? It can be both exhilharating and exhausting.

No stranger to stress or to the mammoth task of rebuilding our country and our world following the Second World War, President Ike offered these practical words: The older I get the more wisdom I find in the ancient rule of taking first things first. A process which often reduces the most complex human problem to a manageable proportion.

My recommendation: Regain your balance. Remember the words of the sage, Lily Tomlin: For fast-acting relief, try slowing down.

Turning the Power Back On

The Monday after Ike, I went to my office to see what kind of shape it was in. While my personal office was thankfully spared any damage, the building was not so lucky. Crews are still working on restoring the proud River Oaks Tower. The first day I could really see patients again was this past Thursday. (When your office is on the twelfth floor, an elevator is imperative.)

If you have strained yourself lugging your belongings from place to place, sleeping on uncomfortable surfaces, or helping others who needed you; a "first things first" approach might include getting me to realign your body so that you are more ready to tackle any of the challenges that lie before you. Let's turn YOUR power back on.

Chiropractic Turns 113

Daniel David Palmer, Founder of Chiropractic.

Disease is a disturbed condition,
not a thing or entity.
~ Daniel David Palmer, Chiropractic Founder

The term "chiropractic" was first coined by D.D. Palmer's close friend, the Reverend Samuel H. Weed. The term chiropractic was taken form the two Greek words:

Cheir (Chiro), Meaning "Hand"
Praxis (Practic), Meaning "Practice"
Thus chiropractic means "Done by Hand"

On September 18, 1895, D. D. Palmer delivered the first "chiropractic adjustment"--restoring a man's hearing. Palmer was always interested in the CAUSE of dis-ease. The spirit of his inquiry into causes of human suffering has inspired generations of chiropractors, including yours truly, to search deeply and broadly for a better understanding of what makes us humans tick. His compassion and persistence in the face of many difficulties, including legal persecution, have made health and healing possible for millions of people. Thanks, Pal!

Nutrition Note: Organically Bound Minerals

When my patients first experience a Bio Cranial Correction, they experience a shift from a more "take action" sympathetic nervous system dominance to a more "chill out" parasympathetic nervous system mode. Other than digestive enzymes, one of the most useful nutritional supplements I've found is the Standard Process formula called, Organically Bound Minerals. It can also help your body to move into an ease-full state. It is not a drug. It can supply what is missing in even the best of diets so that your brain and nerves can work right. You deserve to feel your best.

Thank you for being you, and practice being well,
Stuart C. Marmorstein, D.C., D.B.C.S.
