The Right Ingredients
I wouldn't keep him around long if I didn't feed him well.
(referring to her husband, Paul)
Julia Child
Master Chef and Cooking Enthusiast 1912-2004
The late, great and American Julia Child brought her great passion for food and its loving and skillful preparation from France to America. As far as I am concerned, we owe her a great debt. And yes, definitely see the movie, "Julie and Julia."
I heard a disturbing commentary on the radio this morning. There are some people who believe that real cooking is on its way out! A while back, if someone wanted to eat chicken, they went out to the yard and caught a chicken. Then they killed it, plucked it and gutted it before cooking it. Most of us reading this on our computer screens don't need to go through this set of steps to eat chicken, nowadays. Some think that one day soon, cooking will be "a thing of the past"--just like having to get to know your chicken before eating it. I hope they are wrong.
Is Something Missing from the Recipe?
In my previous newsletter, I said that I would talk about zinc. This vital trace mineral is not something we can take or leave: Zinc is essential to the manufacture of DNA, RNA, proteins, insulin and sperm. With inadequate zinc, we have inadequate healing, and diminished senses of taste and smell. Prostate health, thyroid health and eyesight also depend on zinc. Some signs of zinc deficiency include hair loss and graying hair and white spots on the fingernails.
With lowered immunity, congestion, enlarging prostates, lowered sex drive and chronic yeast infections in addition to the foregoing maladies, you might want to know whether you have enough zinc.
There is an in-office test we can do to determine whether you have enough zinc to feel and function well. It is called the "Zinc Taste Test." It is accurate, quick, and I am currently providing it as a service to my patients at no cost. If you are low in zinc, I carry three different kinds. We can figure out which one is the best one for you, and how much of it would help you.
The Seminar I Just Took
Dr. Michael Dobbins is a fountain of knowledge. His recent seminar in Dallas is still keeping me busy organizing the information he gave his class on improving the nutritional status of people who suffer from:
- ADD and ADHD
- Addictions and cravings
- Obsessive/Compulsive tendencies
- Eating disorders
- many types of mental, emotional and developmental challenges
We also discussed the role of iodine in health. It exerts an enormous influence on the thyroid (and through it the other endocrine glands and the breasts). Iodine also impacts our immunity and can help protect us from many types of serious problems, including Helicobacter pylori (which was discussed several issues ago) and even cancer. Like zinc, iodine is all too scarce in most of our diets.
Over the next few months, I'll be continuing to study the materials I've been accumulating on diet, supplements and health. Coming newsletters will contain a lot more information on these areas, so that you can take better care of yourself.
The building management at 3730 Kirby Drive has managed to get three elevators working in the building. Soon, we will have four. As you may recall, Hurricane Ike took two of them out of commission when water poured through the roof. Now that you have good transportation to the twelvth floor where I have my office, there is little reason to postpone your next visit, if you've been doing so :-) .
Thanks, as always, for reading what I write and recommending my services.
Yours in and for good health,
Stuart C. Marmorstein, D.C., D.B.C.S.
